RESIST Grantee Student/Farmworker Alliance Spied on by Burger King

News reports in early May revealed that Burger King Corporation hired a private security firm to spy on the Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA), a former RESIST grantee made up of students working to improve the lives of migrants in Florida.

The McDonald’s Corporation and Yum Brands (owner of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC) have agreed to subsidize a small pay raise for their tomato pickers after successful campaigns waged by SFA and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. Burger King, however, pursued a different strategy, hiring Diplomatic Tactical Services to infiltrate and report on SFA activities.

The scandal reached new levels with the news that Burger King CEO John Chidsey knew about the company’s use of the company, whose owner Cara Schaffer recently attempted to infiltrate SFA by posing as a student, despite being denied a private investigator’s license by the state of Florida.
